Key points
- Search engine results pages for e-commerce have changed significantly over the past decade, featuring AI overviews, organic shopping grids, and paid ads alongside traditional blue links.
- Search volume for e-commerce queries is increasing, but the buyer's journey has become more fragmented across multiple secondary sources like Reddit, Wirecutter, and AI assistants.
- Manual Reddit marketing and third-party brand mentions have become extremely difficult and high-risk due to strict automated moderation, shifting the focus toward building relationships with power users and sending product samples.
- Securing placements in best-of listicles requires utilizing major affiliate networks like Awin or Impact and pitching editorial teams directly by highlighting product gaps and pre-populating pros and cons.
- Click-through rates for the number one non-ranking position have dropped significantly in the era of AI search, making multi-channel visibility across shopping grids and AI overviews crucial.
- Google Merchant Center optimization, strong product reviews, and specific optional attributes heavily correlate with a brand's ability to rank in organic shopping results.

Chat GPT is relying heavily on Reddit. It's one of the most cited domains by Chat GPT. So, the consensus was if you want to get your brand recommended in Chat GPT, you're going to have to show up in Reddit. And what that led to is just the floodgates opening up of everybody creating Reddit accounts, everybody promoting their brand, everyone doing it. >> You're listening to Customer Growth Sessions presented by Intergrowth, where we talk through [music] strategies to help up-and-coming e-commerce businesses bring in more customers. I'm your host, Pat Ahern. Let's jump in. All right, listeners, welcome back to the latest episode of Customer Growth Sessions. Today, I'm thrilled to have on Jeff Oxford, the founder and CEO over at 180 Marketing. Jeff, welcome to the podcast. >> Pat, thank you so much for having me. Excited to be here. >> Excited to have you on. I was going to say we have a lot of good stuff to get into today. I think good place to start, give us an overview. What do you guys do at 180 Marketing? >> So, we are an e-commerce SEO company. Like yourself, we help e-commerce brands rank higher in Google and AI search, but also we do a lot of work beyond just SEO and AI SEO, on some digital PR, product roundups, getting inclusion listicles, and trying to help our clients show up all the other places that people are searching outside of just Google and Chat GPT. >> That was crisp. I like that. I think the first place I want to start out is talking about SEO, just broad as that term may be nowadays. For listeners that aren't as familiar with SEO, could you start by maybe giving us a more traditional definition of it what SEO is? I would say you and I probably uh we discussed this that we feel like SEO has changed a little over the past year or a couple of years. Say like circa 2018-2020, how would you define SEO? >> I would say SEO is simply positioning your website and brand in a way where search engines and algorithms will find it more favorable than your competitors. >> That's brilliant. So, call it the past 10 years, we've seen quite a bit change in SEO. We've seen a shift from what used to be, call it like eight to 10 blue links that would show up on a Google search engine results page, to something very different nowadays. What does SEO look like today? What do search engine results pages look like today? >> Well, for e-commerce, it looks almost completely unrecognizable from how it did 10 years ago. I remember back in, you know, 2014, 2016 era, you would literally just have 10 blue links. You have the sponsored section, you got your blue links, and that was it. It was simple. It was uh there wasn't as many things to keep track of. Now you look at the search results, you still have those 10 blue links, you still have the paid ads, but now we have AI overviews, now we have people also ask boxes, now we have organic shopping grids, now we have paid shopping grids. And there's times where I've seen e-commerce brands ranking number one, but you have to scroll halfway down page one to even see that number one position because you have all these other SERP features occupying primary real estate. So, the search engine results pages pages have changed quite a bit, which means the click-through rates is all over the place depending on the type of keyword you're going after. >> I love it. We've seen the exact same. So, hearing that, I think the natural progression from there is, okay, I'm running an e-com brand now. You know, Jeff, it sounds like maybe there's not as much value in SEO as there used to be. Should my business still be investing in SEO today? >> It's It's a very interesting question, and the way I would respond to that is the same amount of people that want to buy a product are still going to buy their that product. I don't think that's changing. In fact, if you look at search volume data for e-commerce queries, it's actually increasing. I think there's more people using Google and AI search to buy things online than there were 10 years ago. So, just the raw number of interest in purchasing shopping is up. How they get there, that's different. Maybe they're no longer clicking on position one, two, and three, picking which one they like best and purchasing. Maybe now they're looking at the AI overview and then go clicking on those brands. Maybe now they're seeing a product in the product grid that looks enticing and they click on that. Or maybe they're going to Maybe there's a Reddit thread that's ranking or maybe there's a a Wirecutter article or another best of listicle that's ranking and they're clicking on that. So, it's it's become a lot more fragmented. So, you still have the same amount of people that want to buy your product online, but now there's more options for them to to start and end their their buyers' journey. >> Brilliant. Brilliant. And with that, you mentioned the search experience being a little more fragmented. And you also mentioned a lot of what I'm going to refer to as like secondary sources that people might be going to rather than my website to figure out whether they should buy from me. You know, a couple examples you mentioned there, you mentioned Reddit, you mentioned Wirecutter, you mentioned AI Overviews. Talk to me about some of these other secondary sources. First, what are some of the big ones that you're seeing popping up for e-commerce that I should be mindful of? >> One of the big ones that I'm sure everyone's been talking about lately is Reddit. There's a lot of discussions on Reddit. Reddit is being cited by AI Overviews and ChatGPT and other other large language models. So, there's a lot of discussions on Reddit. You also have just these new AI assistants like ChatGPT and and AI Overviews and for some even Claude or Perplexity. Those are other places people are going for product recommendations. You also have blog posts, just like a simple listicles. There's lots of best of articles on authoritative publications or niche publications that are recommending products and brands. And then there's YouTube. A lot of searches happening on YouTube. I think YouTube's the second largest search engine. You have lots of people going there looking for reviews, unboxing videos, comparisons. So, those are the main different place I'm saying You used a great term for it, but the kind of main different places people are going to for these secondary sources when doing purchasing. >> Amazing. So, let's say Let's take a tangible example. I I love using the example of razor blades. So, let's say that I'm running a razor blade company. How do I figure out what are these secondary sources that are most relevant specifically for my razor blade? >> I would say everything still starts with traditional Google keyword research. You can use Google Keyword Planner or maybe a paid tool like Ahref to see what are people searching for related to razor blades. Are they searching by gender? Maybe it's male or for for men or for women. Are they searching by material? Do they want the the the metal one or the plastic one? Do they want reusable or permanent? Do they want Like there's a lot of different features that come with razor blades. So, you got to find out what people are searching for as part of the razor blade journey. And then if you search those keywords into Google, you're going to start getting a blueprint pretty quickly of what's showing up. So, maybe you have 20 different razor blade related keywords that all have slightly different search intents. Maybe it's for men, women, disposable, metal, five blades, three blades, whatever it is. So, when you go into Google, you're going to quickly see what secondary sources are coming up. Is there particular Reddit threads that are ranking quite a bit for these keywords? Is there particular best of listicles that are showing up a bit? What about the AI overviews? Is there AI overviews coming up for some of these keywords? And in those AI overviews, where's it citing and and what URLs is it is it sourcing for its answer? And then what you can do is take each of those keywords and extrapolate into a question someone might have. So, for example, if someone goes into Google and says and searches best razor blades for men, of the question they're trying to answer is you know, what are the best razor blades for men to buy? So, you can take that prompt and run that in a chat GPT and now you can see what sources chat GPT is relying on. You can see what Reddit threads they're pulling from. You can see what product roundups they're citing. So, I'd say it all starts with traditional keyword research and that can lay out this path of how are people what types of pages are ranking, what types of pages being cited, and that's your road map to try to get more visibility across these secondary sources. >> Brilliant. Brilliant. So, I want to dive deeper into two of those specific secondary sources that you talked about there. Maybe first one we start out with is Reddit and then the secondary one is I I think the term you used for it is like best of listicles. But in essence, the the articles that take the format of the best razor blades 2026. Absolutely. We've all seen a lot of those over time. Uh talk to me about Reddit marketing. What are What are the different approaches I could take to get my brand to start showing up in Reddit? >> Mhm. I would say So, Reddit marketing's evolved quite a bit in the last 12 months particularly. So, 12 months ago, the SEO industry, the e-commerce industry, the digital PR industry, everyone kind of everyone caught on to wait a minute, ChatGPT is relying heavily on Reddit. It's one of the most cited domains by ChatGPT. So, the consensus was if you want to get your brand recommended in ChatGPT, you're going to have to show up in Reddit. And what that led to is just the floodgates opening up of everybody creating Reddit accounts, everybody promoting their brand, everyone doing it. And I remember the first kind of big crackdown came in April of this year, 2026, when Reddit started launching some new moderation programs and tools to really cut back and became more difficult to get comments to stick. But there's still ways you could change you could make your comment look more natural, you could you know, if you had an account that had decent history and karma, you could still get some through. And then there were some more updates in July and August where cracking down even more and to the point where like natural accounts were getting suspended or banned or blocked because the filter kind of over corrected so much. So, it's honestly at the point now that the amount of time and effort it would spend to create a third-party account and build it up and warm it up and have some comments and build a karma score, all those things to try to get a post to stick with that mentions a brand, it is so much work that that same amount of energy is probably best used somewhere else. So, I no longer advise to doing these third-party persona brand mentions. It's very difficult. It's very time-consuming. It has a very low success rate, and I think that same time could be best used in other places. >> that. And even along those lines, personal story here. So, right now, I'm trying to buy a new record player, and naturally, I went to Reddit, and I asked a handful of different redditors in one of the the record or the LP communities, "Hey, here's general price range that I'm looking for. Price isn't top priority. Really just want a good quality record player. I've gone through some cheap ones in the past." And first of all, redditors are awesome. I got so many great recommendations, and I'm pretty sure I know which model I'm going to buy now. But, I gave a shout-out to one of the people who responded and mentioned a specific model, and just saying, "Hey, thanks so much for the feedback. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with this model cuz I've got this model in the past before. I didn't have a great experience with them. I'll keep you posted." And they reached out to me afterwards and said, "Hey, just a heads-up. I don't know why, but your comment got removed entirely." And my theory is, like, I'm someone who's never posted about record players before, and here I am saying, "Here's this brand I'm going to buy." Reddit's auto moderation probably said, "This seems like it's a spammy post." >> And it's happening all the time now. >> Absolutely. Absolutely. And the other to your point on the call it like the the term I I often use to describe it is Reddit astroturfing. With that, there is definitely some brand PR risk that comes to the mic. So, very much on the same page. I I definitely don't recommend brands do that. Between the the moderation degree that Reddit has ramped up to, and then also the brand risk, there's there's a lot of risk associated with that. So, with that, should I write off Reddit entirely? Is it a lost cause? Is there Reddit, essentially, I just have to let the community do their thing? Is there any way that I can have a positive impact on of brand? >> So, there's two options that we're we're testing now. They're still in the beta trial period. One of which is just like with product roundups that we're going to get into next, you know, there's something to be said about putting your product in the hands of influencers, having them test it out, write about it. We're going to try that same approach with Reddit. So, for every community, I'm sure you saw this firsthand with your record player incident, there's there's the power users, the ones that are always commenting, that live there, like they they feel a part of the community. We want to build a relationship with those people, almost build brand ambassadors in a way, where we reach out, we send them free product, and the angle's basically something like, "Hey, I can tell you have a lot of great experience with with record players, and you've you've talked about it, there's so many things you've shared, so much insight. We would love to hear what you think of our product. Can we send you a free one, and just give us your honest thoughts?" You That's step one. Then you you send it to them, they get it, they review it, they're probably just stoked cuz they got a free record player, who wouldn't want that? And then you see what they say. If they say, "Hey, this product's crap, I don't like it, I would never recommend it." That's the end of the conversation. Maybe you get some good feedback you can bring to your product team. But, you know, that's not the time to ask for a recommend to ask for kind of a brand mention or anything like that. But, if they respond positively, we're like, "Wow, like, I ruled this out before, but you guys have some really good features I haven't considered, like, yeah, this has been great." Then you can reply and say, "Hey, that's so awesome, we're so happy to hear it. Would it be worth sharing your experience with some of the other people I've noticed you've commented on this thread, for example." So, you're you're you're never telling them what to do. It's a very gentle nudge, opening the door, and ideally build a partnership and relationship with some of these power users, so even when future threads come up about product recommendations, you're going to have a kind of an army of people in these subreddits that are going to be more likely to recommend your brand. So, that's something that we're testing, and we're just starting the outreach with that now. >> Illustrators, reaching out with a big favor request. If you have taken anything of value away from the podcast, could you take a minute and leave us a review on whatever podcasting platform you're tuning in on, whether that be Apple, Spotify, you name it, it would mean the world to us. Helps other listeners just like you to find the podcast and helps us to grow our following. Similarly, if you're on YouTube, give our page a follow, give this video a thumbs up. It all, again, helps us to grow the podcast. With that, back to the show. >> that now. >> That's such a brilliant idea. I'm curious how you're going about establishing that first contact. My assumption is it's Reddit DMs, but talk to me about that a little bit. >> It's going to be Reddit DMs. I love using AI. I live and breathe in cloud code. So, we've built up built some systems that you enter the the subreddit of your choice and it's going to pull a bunch of comments and look at all the comments and pull a bunch of threads and look at all the comments and look at the users. It's going to start to build a pattern like, "Oh, wait a minute. Here are the powered users that are most active and do the most commenting and here's their brand preferences and here's like you kind of build a little profile about these people and then it's just a simple Reddit private message to try to see if they're going to be interested, if they want some free product. Love it. >> And I'm curious if you're approaching that from, you know, what I'd refer to as maybe like a a branded Reddit handle. You know, let's say it's Yes. Pat's Razor Blades again. If it's, you know, Pat's Razor Blades is the official account reaching out or if it's more so, you know, a personal Reddit user. Maybe their handle is Joe at Pat's Razor Blades or even just Joe Smith, you know, whatever their name may be. >> We do a branded account. I've gone back and forth of do we try to distance itself a brand cuz everyone's picturing the same thing. You want you want to be careful of your reputation online, especially Reddit. They are quick to call out the shills and the astro turfers and everyone's dreading that screenshot of your message where they they flame you on the forum. So, you know, since we are doing such a gentle message, just like first one, do you want free product? I think that's a very safe bet having the name client's branded Reddit handle attached to it. So, even when you're doing the gentle nudge, you're not telling them what to do, you're not asking them what what to do. You're making a a very light suggestion. So, that's a framework I'm looking at it is if somebody screenshot this message and put it in the the subreddit, would I be worried or not? And if I'd be worried, then I'd probably have to adjust my messaging a little bit more. >> So, you hinted at what direction you're going to recommend with call it getting featured in the best of listicles. Let's talk about that a little bit. What are you seeing work in 2026 to get clients featured in these best razor blades of 2026 type articles? >> So, this is still something that we're pivoting towards. I'm sure there's some people that have either running a digital PR agency or they have a digital PR agency that might be able to offer way more depth into this, but I'll just tell you from from everything I've done so far, what we're seeing work at least for us is you have to be on one of the major affiliate networks to to start off. Basically, all these big brands, Forbes, uh Wirecutter, Business Insider, what all these big publications, they're not going to take the time to sign up for your Shopify app affiliate program through a version or something else. You have to be on one of the major ones. So, all these big publications, they're either signed up with Awin or Impact or some of the other big ones out there, but if you're running e-commerce store and you're listening to this, the best one is probably either Awin or Impact. It's low cost, it starts 30 bucks a month, has lower fees, and that opens the door where now you can at least have a conversation with some of these big publications. So, you can reach out and with these product roundups, there's two teams. There's the editorial team, these are the writers and editors that are actually doing the research, testing the product, writing the post, and there's the commerce team. And the commerce team's one job is to make as much money as possible for the brands. So, if you go through the commerce team, yes, you can get included on that Forbes listicle that you've been eyeing or that Wirecutter listicle you've been eyeing, but expect to pay thousands of dollars to get there in addition to an affiliate link. So, that's expensive. That's why I always recommend, and it's a much cheaper route, just go straight to the editorial team. Find the editor, find the writer, offer them the product sample. They still have jurisdiction on what they're going to write. It's a weird balance between the editorial team and the in the commerce team, where the editorial team wants to put the best content, they're proud of it, they want to say it's the greatest recommendation, but the commerce team wants whatever's going to pay the highest. This is weird balance between the two. And if you go to the editorial team, and then you relationship, you offer to send them free product, and you're set up on one of these affiliate networks, that's going to be the lower cost route to go, but it's also more difficult because they are getting pitched so many times per day. You'll have to either be consistent or just have a really good angle and a really good pitch. >> I love that. Talk to me about how you would recommend formulating that pitch to the editorial team. >> Basically, what we do is when we reach out to them, we keep it really simple, and we try to highlight a gap that in their in their listicle that our client's product fills. So, if we stick with razor blades, we can say like, "Hey, I noticed you mentioned some great brands like brand A and brand B, but I noticed there wasn't any mention of a razor blade for sensitive skin." For example, let's say your product is good for sensitive skin. So, that's your angle. That's how you're coming in now. And then you expand on that the next line, which is like, "Our product is really good for sensitive skin cuz we have this cool sensitive skin technology that does X, Y, and Z." And then what I like to do below that is a lot of these listicles almost always have a pro section and a con section. So, in the email, I always say, "Here are some of the pros and cons of our product." And we'll say what it does good, and we'll pick one thing that's maybe not as important that is maybe a con or a weakness. Now, what The reason we take this approach is if you're a writer or an editor, you want the least amount of work possible. If you're going to have go back to this article and update it, you're going to you don't want to you're going to have to think, "Okay, what am I going to put for the pros and what am I going to put for the cons?" Work Moving things along a little bit more and try to make their job just a little bit easier so so there's less friction for them to to include our client. So, those Oh, and we offer to send them a free sample. So, those are kind of the main ingredients we use when sending our pitches. >> Love that. And I want to dive into one point that you mentioned there about having both the pros and cons that you prepopulate to help the writer out. This is something I go back and forth with clients on on I would say a daily basis. Talk to me about why you would want to include the cons in the mix, let's say. You know, isn't it better Isn't it better if I only talk about the good things in my brand? You know, our brand is perfect in every regard. We don't have any weaknesses. We're always the best option for customers. How would you respond to that client? >> On the website itself, I would agree. The website's where you're going to sell your product. Let the internet and everyone else, if they have cons, they'll point those out for you. But, on the the product pages, the category pages, the email marketing, all those things, I keep it all positive. You don't need any cons. But, if you're going to an editor who on every single product on that list has shown the pros and the cons, they're going to find a con. So, it's almost advantageous for you to kind of set the narrative how you like about your products. Like, have a con that's maybe not as detrimental so they're not digging around and oh, this one person reported this. So, that's the con that's going in there. So, you can control the narrative a bit more, but it's also reducing that barrier to entry where now if I'm an editor, I'm like, "Oh, this person already did a lot of my work for me. It's not that much extra work to add a paragraph and call it a day." So, that's the kind of the main benefits of having a quick con or two in the email. >> Hey listeners, if unpredictable revenue is keeping you up at night, this is for you. Most e-commerce brands don't have an advertising problem. They have a predictability problem. Pat from InnerGrowth here. We help brands to build a profitable Meta Ads system for their business within 90 days. If you're interested in learning more, go to innergrowth.com/cgs to book a strategy session with our team. Once again, that's innergrowth.com/cgs. I want to go back to one of the elements we touched on at the very beginning, which is what I would broadly refer to as you know, call it the ROI of SEO/AEO type component. Quick sidebar, listeners. When I talk about SEO, AEO, GEO, I essentially look at them as one almost blanket statement that all cover the same overarching principles. There's nuance with each of them, but there's a pretty substantial overlap between the three. But, Jeff, let's talk about the ROI of SEO. So, let's say for my razor blade company, how can I personally go about looking into my brand and deciding whether I should be investing in SEO? >> I think it comes down to the keywords people are searching for. If you want to get a rough ROI gut check, what you could do is There's two ways. There's You enter the your keyword You do some keyword research to see what people are searching for, and then, you know, if you see across all your keywords that's getting searched about 10,000 times per month, you could kind of guess like, all right, well, if I'm getting 3% of those clicks and I'm converting 2% of those visits, and my AOV is 50 bucks, you can do back of the napkin math to get a rough idea. What I found works well is I love using Ahrefs, which is pretty much synonymous They're not synonymous, but they do the exact same thing as SEMrush, which is its biggest competitor. If you have one of those tools, you pretty much have all your bases covered for SEO. And what I like about them is actually give you traffic estimates for the top ranking pages. So, if there's a keyword like razors for men, and you it'll show you who's ranking number one, who's ranking number two, and an estimated traffic that that page is getting. So, let's say the estimated traffic is 4,000 visits per month from organic search. Then, you can say, okay, well, 4,000, let's say we our average site conversion rate is 2%. So, what is that? 80 per month. And then if our AOV is $100, that's going to be $8,000 per month." So, you can take that that approach. It's not going to be perfect. There's a lot of assumptions there, nuances there. But if you just want to see is it within the range, that's probably a quick way to start. >> And to your point, you know, if if someone starts out with that and they look into it and they say, "My gut says that SEO is probably at least worth a consideration." That's a great time to reach out to an SEO expert. You know, reach out to Jeff. Perfect scenario there. Jeff can give you the more nuanced context and ultimately help you decide is it a good scenario for you. >> Yeah, yeah, there and there are nuances. I know, Pat, you've been doing this for a long time, too. You probably know the the issues and opportunities when it comes to SEO for an e-commerce site. So, don't be selling yourself short, either. >> You're very kind. I Yeah, I joke I It was a lot easier to do the ROI like the ROI, you know, benchmarking, let's say, you know, pre-AI overviews when you could say click-through rate for ranking in position one is 25% this year. This year it's 28%. You know, position two is 18%, whatever it may be. Do the math from there. It's It's a little bit more nuanced at this point. But to your point, I love using Ahrefs. >> So, if you if you had to guess, what do you think ranking position one for a non-branded keyword is these days? >> Hmm. I >> Cuz you were right. It used to be 20, 25, maybe even 30% back in the day. >> Absolutely. So, I would say it varies so much depending on the type of question. I would say if you look at what I would refer to as the type of question where the average searcher can get the entire answer they're looking for just from an AI overview. So, let's say >> a commercial thing, "Best razor blades" or "razor blades for men." Like those types of product-focused keywords. What's your gut tell you from everything you've seen over the years? >> I would imagine So, I would assume let's say that the the product carousel, let's say the organic shopping carousel pops up above position number one, which is what I'll oftentimes see in the US market. I would say your click-through rate is going to be five, maybe 10% if you're really lucky, and that carousel is probably going to get 20% of clicks would be my guess. >> You're super close. I was curious about this a few weeks ago. So, I had my my AI go through all my Google Search Console accounts for all the e-commerce clients that we're working with and just see, okay, for the keywords ranking in number one that are non-branded, what's the click-through rate? And on average, it was 3.3% for ranking number one. Yeah. So, again, this used to be like 20, 25, maybe even 30% 10 years ago. Now, it's about 3.3 and 1/2%. >> Man, that's wild. >> Yeah. So, that's all the more kind of paints this picture that it's even more important to make sure you're showing up in the AI overview and make sure your products are showing up in the shopping grid. And, you know, paid could be paid is something too. They're always getting more aggressive with paid, but you don't have to be there. There's plenty of organic spots. So, it's just again, it's become way more fragmented and you can't just rely on ranking number one anymore like you could before. >> Definitely, definitely. And actually, Jeff, along those lines, stepping back a little bit slash kind of tangent, but I want to talk through the organic shopping grid side of things. So, for listeners who maybe this is a new concept for them, how do I get my brand featured in these organic shopping results? >> So, about two years ago, I did a big study about this. I took 5,000 product keywords like razor blades or toaster ovens or Bluetooth microphones. I ran them all and I wanted to see if what's is there any correlation between why some get recommended why some products show up more often than others.
