Video summary
The video discusses the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) introduced by Shopify in partnership with other companies, explaining how it allows merchants to push catalog data from their Shopify stores to various AI and conversational surfaces like ChatGPT, Claude, and Muse, while emphasizing the importance of accurate product data and its potential for developers to build curated marketplaces.
Key points
- Shopify has introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) in partnership with other companies to push store catalog information to various current and future surfaces like ChatGPT, Claude, and Muse.
- UCP enables products from a Shopify store to potentially appear when users search for items on AI and conversational tools, provided the catalog is properly optimized.
- Accurate and correct product data, including titles, descriptions, and imagery, is crucial because tools rely on text searchability rather than relying solely on image content.
- Developers can use UCP to build custom, curated marketplaces and immersive shopping experiences focused on specific niches rather than building another standard e-commerce platform.
- While UCP is still in its early stages and has a long way to go, merchants and developers are encouraged to structure and value their catalog data now as the future of shopping evolves.

How do you get your products from within Shopify into tools such as Muse or Chat GPT or Claude or any of these additional [music] surfaces that are starting to become more and more available. Hi everyone, my name is Anerv Serene and I'm one of the founders of P3 media. AI has been the buzzword at this point seems like for almost 2 years if not longer. And what do you really do with AI? You can run your business. You can do data analytics. You can do automations. All of that is fantastic. But what about the next generation of commerce? What about additional surfaces? Now, [music] Shopify in partnership with a few other big companies have come out with this thing called [music] UCP, which is a universal commerce protocol. And what this allows you to do is it allows you to take all the catalog information from your store and push it out to all the different surfaces that are not only available today, but will be available in the future. So, if someone goes to chat GPT the next time and says, "Hey, where do I buy a red t-shirt?" it is a good chance that if you're spending enough time on making your catalog searchable, it will be available inside that tool. Is it going to be perfect right out of the gate? Absolutely [music] not. But it allows you to do something amazingly beautiful, amazingly [music] stunning, and it's all built into Shopify very natively. So, when you're thinking about things like product descriptions, product [music] titles, the imagery that you use for your product, it's really important that all of this information be correct, that it be accurate, and that it is used for people that are searching for things. So, if you're just selling a red t-shirt, but you don't include the word red, but your image has the word red, that's really not going to work. So, you just have to have really good data in order to do this. One other benefit of UCP, especially if you're a developer, is that you can build absolutely stunning marketplaces. So, for me personally, I'm a big traveler and I love to go out and scout for products that are travel friendly, that can make travel easier, all these things. But it's really hard to go out and source those cataloges and to build a specific marketplace. We don't want another Amazon.com. But what if you can go in, search for all these products, go out and create them and curate them into an immersive experience? You can do that, especially if you're a developer. All of these things are possible because of Shopify's introduction [music] of UCP and how their catalog data gets pushed out not only to your current surfaces but to every other surface in the future. Now UCP has a long way to go because it's just at [music] the very beginning. So, if you're not thinking about the value of that data, you're not thinking about how your catalog is structured, it's really encouraged that you go out and do that because the future of commerce and the future of shopping is going to continue to change whether we're on board or
