I don't form any kind of emotional bonds like I used to see formed on tele retail. Well, hi everybody. This is Diane Gilman, formerly known as the queen of jeans on QVC HSN. Very relevant for today's podcast. And we are in our fashion Thursday segment. Here's my question. Do you shop on TikTok? I do. Oh my god. Especially fatal late night like 2:00 a.m. in Europe kind of shopping. But TikTok didn't invent live shopping and shopping from a personality that may become familiar to you, but it definitely reinvented tele retail shopping. So, with that question in mind and also I'm in my 80s and I swear I converted over to TikTok shopping like boom. First of all, they got my algorithm. So, if you're going to have people that are presenting you with product, at least for me, at they maybe about 60-70% of them are more mature women and it's a little bit more believable to me, but if you bought from me or anybody else that you formed a community bond with, which was truly the strength of shopping on tele retail QVC HSN, do you feel that same bond with the personalities that show you product on TikTok? Now, for me, I invented a middle-aged jean. I wore it every day of my life from the time I invented it about 2004, 2005 till the day I walked away from tele-retailing. So, that was about 2 years ago. I knew the product. I created the philosophy behind the product. I knew every single detail of it and I had perfected it. I knew what worked about it. I knew what was universal about it. I chose all the fabrics, all the trimmings. I was so personally invested in it and I think part of the success of DG2 on HSN and QVC was I was truly in love with my product. It was authentic. I was a creator. I was a product creator, a content creator. So, when I walked away from it and decided I wanted to continue my career in front of a camera but doing podcasts, I got a series of invitations. Very broad-ranging products. Everything from more mature skin makeup, Prime Prometics to bison meat protein capsules to Uber for older adults. And we had to, my organization and myself, make a promise to ourselves that we would only say yes and accept selling any of these on TikTok if I had thoroughly tested the product, if I had adopted it for usage in my everyday life and I could come off as real. I wasn't just going to say yes to everything. Believe me, it was tempting. Do you make the same personal investments and feelings of camaraderie and friendship and trust with a TikTok presenter as you do or did with tele-retail? And then my next question, for me, it's almost unfair to ask me because I spent 30 years of my life selling product in front of a camera on QVC and HSN. I can spot a fakey faker in a heartbeat. And I always thought a lot of the downfall of brands on tele-retail was because the inventor, the manufacturer, the creator of the product did not want to go on air and put on what we used to call talking heads, which was you hire somebody. And this may be their audition to become a show host eventually, but I never thought that talking heads were as persuasive, as captivating as the people like me who were on air. I mean, I'm still passionate about my product and it's been years since I created it. I am somebody who's a hybrid. I did tele-retail and now I do my own videos for product I choose that I think is worthy for TikTok. And I don't know if I'm this persuasive. Some of the products I really, really do love. And maybe those are the areas that I do better. But it was a big culture shock to me to come from doing maybe a two, three hour block non-stop of selling on QVC or HSN to doing a three-minute video and you had to pack in all that power, all that enthusiasm, all that authenticity, all that feeling of being really behind the product and explaining it and directing the customer. I also don't know and I want to ask you guys out there, if you are 50 and over, have you adopted TikTok? I mean for me, TikTok and Instagram I'm going to be very honest with you, I'm totally addicted. I love it. I use a lot of my screen time every day to be on those sites and to the truth, I've learned a lot about everything off of them. But I think I'm the anomaly and I'm not the one that everybody should be looking at because I was part of a media machine. I crossed over to this pretty easily. Also, I stopped shopping brick and mortar. And I still loved shopping and wow, my algorithm on TikTok just caught exactly who I was almost immediately. That kind of immediacy is what and that personality where you get to know the person, supposedly is a bridge between tele-retail and TikTok. But I see a lot of differences. You guys used to spend hours with me on air a day on today's special day which was that specialized product. We spent 8 hours together during the day and most of those hours were deeply populated with what I call our Diane Gilman DG2 community who wanted to hear what I had to say. I wanted to definitely hear what all of you had to say and what was new. It was a ping pong ball of going back and forth of communication cuz we used to take customer phone calls. No such communication. Second of all it can't be hours a day anymore. You have to keep your sales videos for TikTok very personalized but very short because one of the downfalls of tele-retail is slow mo. Oh my god, I sat down the other day and I was timing how long it took to show the product, whatever it was they were selling. I think it was that today's special. Then the product number which they show for like 90 seconds before they even scroll down and show the price. And guess what? People don't want that kind of slowness anymore. So what I love about TikTok is boom. You get product and now I get catalogs of product that you can go through and say boom, I like that. Oh, I like that. Oh, I like that. Find out the price, everything immediately. Even the metabolism of TikTok is slowing down cuz I haven't gotten a lot of new product in a while. In the beginning I was flooded with it. I was overwhelmed by it and I could not believe how accurately they nailed me and my taste level. And if you order one thing, suddenly there's 100 things that are in that category. How about you? Do you feel the same way, too? And people also ask me, "What do I think the weaknesses are?" Aha, very interesting. Now, one reason I loved and worked with and ordered off of QVC and HSN for over a quarter of a century was a customer service consistency that was so [snorts] important. So, you could be ordering from 100 different brands, but if something went wrong, you called the tele retailer. You called QVC or HSN, and that's who you dealt with, and they took care of your problem for you hopefully. Uh that is not true with TikTok. You are on your own. And what I found is, and this is not a good strategy or result. Probably, out of everything I've ordered, I've gotten 60, 70% of it. And the rest of it, and some places, some sites, I ordered from two or three times. They confirmed the order. They say, "Thank you." They tell you how great you are, and then they never deliver it. Then you hear, "Oh, it's getting packed. It's getting loaded." You never get it. Or you get it 10 weeks later. It's not even the same season anymore because there is no what I would call customer service congregate or umbrella where you feel a certain sense of uniformity. You have someone you can go to and talk to and and and and I found that a lot of the brands that are on Tik Tok and Instagram, you're actually ordering directly from the Chinese factory. Now, I admire the Chinese factories. I know them because I lived on and off in Hong Kong for a couple of years. I understand them. But they're not meant to fulfill individual orders from customers. They're meant to do bulk shipments to wherever it's going. So, here's what I question. If you shopped Teleway Tail, did you have your favorite host like Colleen Lopez? Were you literally trusted and she was 100% 110% trustworthy? Did you trust everything she said? And if you liked DG2 and Diane Gilman and Colleen and I were on together, did you feel totally free, totally confident to buy a fitted bottom off television cuz that was always my big challenge. How to describe it so you knew you were secure. But bottom line was if you needed to return it, you had QVC or HSN behind you. You don't really have that with Tik Tok and I found it very difficult once you get goods to figure out how how turn around and return them. And then, I almost feel like it's some kind of fraud. I wanted a mattress cover. Okay, this site promised the best mattress cover. It wasn't that cheap, but it was on sale on sale on sale. This is the last day of the sale. I've ordered it three times. I have never gotten it. So, what is that? Is that a TikTok fraud thing where they get your selling information and that's all they ever intend to do? Bottom line is, it to me, shopping off TikTok is exciting because I love fashion. I saw a lot of new looking product. And frankly, I bought two or three fairly high ticket items off TikTok, and guess what? They were great in person. Then, I bought some stuff where you could tell it came directly from a Chinese factory. And they didn't even bother to honor my order by sending me the right color or the right size for bed sheets. Unbelievable. And then, trying to return them was a big problem. So, I can parallel because I am such an avid shopper, and I adapted almost immediately from brick-and-mortar stores closing all over Manhattan, all over the country, to shopping online, to now TikTok shop, which is its own unique thing. Here's what I have to say. Number one, I don't listen. Those influencers who come on with products selling it out of their kitchen or their bedroom or their hallway. Yeah, I think it's interesting to see it on them, and that might help me a little, but my experience with buying bottoms off TikTok and what did I sell on tele-retail bottoms not trustworthy. If they're leggings and then they're 10% spandex, yeah. But if it's anything that's woven and requires a waistband measurement or something, I'm out. Second of all, do I find them believable? Only I would say maybe I'm going to be kind, 15% of the time. Mostly I find their pitch a little desperate, a bit of I want to sell it, I want to sell it, I want to sell, I need the commission. I don't find them anybody where I I bond with them. Only occasionally will I say, that's an older woman in her 50s or or very early 60s. I like her look. I'd like to be able to duplicate something within her look. I don't form any kind of emotional bonds like I used to see formed on tele-retail, but I'll tell you what, I think tele-retail was so different. You were sitting in your home, you were an aging customer, you were getting a bargain, you were in love with some of the show hosts, believe me, and they're great people in person. And then you fell in love with some of us as the creators of products, me, Joy Mangano, maybe Andrew Lessman for vitamins. But we had hours on air every day to have a conversation with you, to take those phone calls, to make it so personalized. I don't think you can do that with a two-minute slot on Tik Tok or Instagram. I don't think you can, and I think you can look as good as you can look, and you can be enthusiastic, but it isn't that same kind of bonding and the formation of what I always called community because at our height with DG2 on HSN and QVC International, we had close to 750,000 women who loved the brand, who wanted to interact with us on air. Ask me on a beauty level about all the things that drive me crazy about the cosmetic industry as all of us, you and I, are growing older, and one basic point I will tell you is if you have made the decision to have natural gray hair or white hair like me, you can't find an eyebrow pencil in the right color. Oh, it's so weird. You go out into the market, and yeah, there's like warm blondes and and beiges, but that doesn't look right with salt and peppa. Uh until you get to Prime Prometics, which is the only eyebrow pencil on the market that comes in a gorgeous shade of medium gray. It looks natural. It is a very thin pencil, so you can actually feather in the lines. Very easy to work with and stays on for hours and hours. It's so weird to put on your makeup and then have to put on a different color than your hair for your eyebrows, no. You do not have to suffer that way anymore. Prime Cosmetics is superb and truly in an entire cosmetic market. It stands head and shoulders above the rest and is truly unique and tailored to us older girls. Thank you, Prime Cosmetics. And, of course, go to primecosmetics.com, type in our code, and get a discount. You are going to love this product. So, I think the third thing is especially as a fashion designer, which I was in devoted my career, my life to, and I'm so lucky I got to do that. I loved it so much. You could show your whole collection. You have up to nine models on screen at a time at the height of the brand. And some of them were blonde, and some of them were tall, and some of them were African-American, and some of them were Latino, and some of them were petite, and some of them were a plus size. And you could show all the variation of the sizing and the colors. Not Not so with TikTok. So, what is the advantage of TikTok? Speed. And I think novelty. Newness. And there are ways to shop on TikTok with like Apple Pay, where literally a purchase will take you 30 seconds. I love that. However, I do find it very dangerous at the same time. Yeah, a lot of impulse buying, where I think on tele-retail, you could really take your time, and it was so new, and it was definitely a form of entertainment. I called it infotainment. You could be entertaining while you were giving all the background and and all the knowledge of the product. So, I ask you these questions because I do think tele retail is just on a downward curve. Cable TV is shrinking up to 20% every year, year after year. It's coming down to nothing. Young people don't even have a television. They don't even watch cable TV anymore. They get everything off their phone. And to a certain extent, I get maybe 75% of all my information for a day and for a life and what I order and what I eat and what I get delivered to my home off my phone. Have you made that transfer? I find TikTok and Instagram extremely entertaining, but that's because one thing is fashion, the next thing is political, the next thing is baby kittens, the next thing is another maybe baby elephant, then we're back to something else, then we're on to eating in Italy, then we're So, I love honestly being a recipient of the diversity of TikTok, and I don't necessarily plug in what I want to see. I want to see what they have to show me and maybe discover something totally unique and completely new. Where do I see the downfall of TikTok? I think it's in the whole mechanism for getting the product and/or being able to return it, and not having that confidence. And I've gotten burned more than a few times. Just is the way it is. So, it's not like you're under one website, like you're buying everything, every brand from Nordstrom's website, or what was Neiman Marcus's website. I mean, honestly TikTok and Instagram are the wild, wild west when it comes to retailing. But, I'm going to ask you, if you are over 50, do you still, I want to hear you guys. I want to hear what you have to say. Do you still enjoy shopping brick and mortar? Do you still shop brick and mortar? Did you convert easily to shopping online? I know I did. Oh my god. The first time I just press that button, buy, I thought, uh, whole new world for me. Third of all, did you transfer a lot of your fashion dollars to Amazon? For me, I buy basics, Amazon basics, great value, great product, but I don't think they have done a a great job of convincing a female customer like me that an upper end product is viable off Amazon, or the way they present it to me is either with very, very young influencers that I have no tie with at all. Or it's just a static social media picture of a product without any romance to it. And how many of you, and I am shocked at how many of you haven't converted to TikTok or Instagram? How many of you now find your entertainment that way, your political points of views bolstered that way, buying exotic gifts, objects, home deck, foodstuffs off of TikTok and Instagram? I'll tell you what, I I understand so profoundly when they talk about teenagers being addicted to these sites. I'm not a teenager, and I'll tell you what, I am shocked at how many hours a day I spend scrolling. And once I start, I'm just totally and completely immersed. I can't stop. And then again, I don't know what it is, but they just understand presenting the product so much better than somebody like Amazon. Now, do I have more confidence in shipping and returning with Amazon? Yeah, I do. But Amazon has never graduated to making the product look fashionable or appealing or must-have. So weird, cuz I buy almost everything else, practical household products, food from Whole Foods. I buy it all off Amazon, but when it comes to fashion and certain home deck items, no. I buy those off TikTok and occasionally Instagram. And I'm wondering if you, as an over 50 customer have made that switch and believe in that product presentation? So, what do you feel about what your algorithm is? Have they gotten you? Are they in your brain? Cuz I'll tell you what, they're in my brain. And how often do you do late-night scrolling? And make total insane impulse purchases. Oh my god, I did one last night. We'll see. I don't know. I I may have to go to TikTok rehab. I'm not kidding. And are you used to buying online now? And how much fashion do you buy online? And do you price compare with brick-and-mortar stores that are online, like Nordstrom's? Or do you price compare as some of my friends do, between TikTok Shop and Amazon? And they say TikTok comes in at a better price. I basically don't do that kind of comparison. What I do is go for the look, the drama, the uniqueness. And I see a lot of stuff I'm really impressed with that I've never seen before. And if you do buy off TikTok, are you frustrated like me at not receiving about 25% of what you order? And also lengthy shipping times. Oh my god. It could take you forever to get something off TikTok. So, with that in mind, I can't wait to see what your responses are. And if you have just converted from tele-retail to TikTok, I would love to know why and what your shopping habits are. Let's share. We're a female community. Yeah. Okay. HSN, QVC, right in there with TikTok. See you soon. >> Thank you so much for listening to Two Young to Be Old podcast. The episode may be over, but the fun doesn't have to stop here.
