Video summary
The video discusses three methods for monitoring competitor pricing on Google Shopping and other online channels: manual checking, using Google Merchant Center analytics, and employing automated price monitoring tools. It compares the pros and cons of each approach and provides strategies on how to act on the pricing data gathered.
Key points
- Google Shopping displays product prices and competitor comparisons to customers before they make a click, making price visibility crucial for retailers.
- The first method is checking prices manually by searching for specific products, which is free but does not scale and only captures a single moment in time.
- The second method uses Google Merchant Center analytics to view benchmark prices and price gaps, though it lacks competitor names, historical data, and stock information.
- The third method involves using a price monitoring tool to automatically track competitor prices, shipping costs, and stock levels over time across multiple stores.
- Retailers can take specific actions based on their findings, such as adjusting prices when losing clicks, holding prices when rivals are out of stock, or testing increases when they are the cheapest.
- The video highlights five common pricing mistakes: comparing different variants, ignoring shipping costs, checking prices only once, relying on a single location, and treating the Google benchmark as a fixed target.

Before your customers click, Google Shopping shows them your price next to every competitor's. So the question is simple. Do you see what they see? There are three ways to check. One is free, one is built into Merchant Center, and one runs automatically. Let's compare them. Google Shopping is the best place to start. One search shows which stores sell a product, what they charge, and often the shipping. Since 2020, most listings have been free. So retailers appear whether or not they run ads, but it doesn't show every store and results can change with location and time. Method one, check manually. Search with the brand and model number or the barcode, not a general description. Open the product and compare stores. Check the total price, including shipping. Read Google's price insights, which label a price as low, typical, or high. And always write down the seller and the date. It's free, but it doesn't scale. 20 products across 10 stores already means 200 prices. And in our 2026 study, 46% of products changed price within 30 days. A manual check shows a moment, not a trend. Method two, Merchant Center. If you list on Google, go to analytics, then pricing. You'll see a benchmark price, the average price that typically leads to more successful auctions and clicks. and your price gap against it. You may also get sale price suggestions, but know its limits. The benchmark is an average, so it shows no competitor names. It needs a valid GTIN. It shows only the latest prices, not history. It covers only your own catalog and nothing about stock. Method three, a price monitoring tool. It finds the stores listing your products, matches each listing to your product, and records every seller's price, shipping, and stock over time. You get named sellers, stores outside Google Shopping, history, and alerts. And accurate matching by GTIN, MPN, title, and image is what separates useful tools from noisy ones. Side by side, manual checks are free but slow. Merchant Center covers your whole Google catalog, but without names, history, or stock. A monitoring tool gives you all three, plus alerts for thousands of products. Then act on what you find. Above the benchmark and losing clicks? Check shipping first, then adjust above your floor. A cheaper rival is out of stock. Hold your price. You're the cheapest by far. Test a small increase. A price looks far too low. Check the match before you react and avoid five mistakes, comparing different variants, ignoring shipping, checking only once, trusting one location, and using the benchmark as a target because it ignores your costs. Price Rest finds your products through Google search, Google Shopping, and site search, matches them with product codes and AI image recognition, and tracks every seller's price and stock across Google Shopping, Amazon, and more than 2500 stores in 64 countries. Your customers already see every competitor's price. Make sure you see it, too. Start your 14-day free trial. No credit card required. The full guide is linked in the description.
