Video summary

Shopify's 2026 edition introduces over 200 updates affecting analytics, rollouts, AI integration, checkout, security, and store performance, with specific tools designed to alter how merchants test, sell, and manage their online businesses.

Key points

  • Shopify updated its session counting method by filtering out bots by default and extending session duration until 30 minutes of inactivity, which alters historical conversion rate comparisons.
  • The new rollouts feature permits merchants to schedule theme changes, discounts, and catalogs as launches, events, or A/B test experiments directly within basic plans and higher.
  • Sidekick and Sim Jim integration allows merchants to use AI shoppers for generating store improvement ideas and executing bulk product edits across collections.
  • Eligible stores can now sell products directly inside AI assistants like Google Gemini with Shopify-powered checkout, though standard tracking pixels do not fire on these orders.
  • Old script tags used by apps are being phased out, with a complete stop to loading scheduled for March 2027, requiring apps to migrate to theme app extensions or web pixels.
  • Checkout updates introduce custom fields like text inputs and date pickers natively, alongside enhanced fraud prevention tools and automated chargeback response management.

Your Shopify conversion rate changed last month, and you didn't touch a thing. Shopify just released default 26 edition. That's more than 200 updates on one page, and I went through all of them so that you don't have to. Most of them you can ignore, but seven of them will change how you test, how you sell, and how you read your numbers. And at least two of them you should set up before Black Friday. For each one, I'll tell you what it does and where to find it and whether it's worth your time. Then I'll run you through the rest quickly at the end. Let's start with the one that already changed your numbers. Between September 21 and 23, Shopify changed how it counts sessions. But sessions are now filtered out of your reports by default. A session no longer ends at midnight. It runs until the visitor has been inactive for 30 minutes. And some visits without a page view now count, like a customer who goes straight to your checkout from a cart link. Why does this matter? Because sessions are the bottom half of your conversion rate. If bots were inflating your sessions, your conversion rate looked lower than it really was. With the bots gone, the same sales can show higher conversion rate. And if those new checkout visits add sessions, it can go the other way. Your orders and sales don't change at all. So if your conversion rate moved since September, your store didn't get better or worse. The measurement just changed. So Shopify's own advice is to use the numbers after the update as your new baseline. So when you compare this Black Friday with the last year's, look at orders and sales, not just at the conversion rate. Two more analytics updates I really like. First, you can add your own notes to reports. So when sales jump, you can write "Email campaign went out" or "New theme launched" right on the chart. Months later, you'll know why the line moved. Second, you can now group and filter reports by category, metafields, and meta objects, color, material, designer, warranty, loyalty status. So you can finally see which material sells best without exporting everything to spreadsheets. My take, start adding notes today. It costs nothing and it makes every report more useful later. This is the one I'm most excited about. It's called rollouts. You'll find it under markets and rollouts. A rollout is a set of changes to your store that goes live together on a schedule. It can include a theme change, a checkout configuration, market catalogs, and discounts. There are three types. A launch makes the changes permanent at the time you pick. An event runs for a set period and rolls everything back on its own. And an experiment is an AB test. It splits your traffic between your current version and the new one and shows you the results. And think about Black Friday. You can build your sale theme, your Black Friday discounts, and your sale catalog with Black Friday prices ahead of time. Schedule it all as one event. It goes live at midnight and it rolls back on its own when the sale ends. No more staying up and switching themes and no more discounts left running by mistake in December. And the experiment type means you can test a new theme or theme changes against your current one with no extra app. A few things to know, rollout work on the basic plan and up. Experiments need the grow plan or higher and they don't work on old vintage themes. My take, if you only set up one thing from this video before Black Friday, make it this one. Sidekick, Shopify's AI assistant, got a lot more useful in this update. The biggest change, Sidekick can now suggest improvements to your store that it tested with Sim Jim and you can choose which ones to apply. Sim Jim is a Shopify app that sends AI shoppers with human-like personas through your store. It shows you how they behave, how they add to cart, how they move around your store. You can even give a simulation a shopping goal and it shows you on your store where to make changes. Now, be careful here. AI shoppers are not real customers. Sim Jim is still a research preview and it charges per simulation. So, use it to find ideas worth testing, then test the winners on real traffic with a rollout experiment. That's a really solid workflow. The second change I'd actually use every week, Sidekick can now make a plan, you approve it once, and it applies many changes at a time, like editing the description of every product in a collection. And that's hours of work saved. And for theme work, you can now give Sidekick markdown files that explain how your theme is built and what your design preferences are. It applies them across conversations, so you don't have to repeat yourself. My take, use the bulk changes now and treat Theme Gem as a source of ideas, not as proof. Your products can now be sold inside AI assistants. Shoppers can buy products inside Google AI mode in the Gemini app with checkout powered by Shopify. They buy in the chat and you manage the order in your admin like you do with any other order. There are no extra fees, just your normal payment processing. And Shop Pay also works in more AI agents now, but there's a part most people will miss. Not every store gets in. It's rolling out to eligible stores. You need to sell to customers in the US, Canada, or Australia. Your products need to be in Google Merchant Center, and your products need to be eligible for Shopify catalog. In your admin, under sales channels, then Agentyc, you can see if your store is eligible for Shopify catalog and the reason if it isn't. Shopify's help page tells you exactly what to fix. And one thing to know before you turn it on, in this AI checkout, Google Analytics and your custom pixels don't fire. So, those sales won't show up in your tracking the way normal orders do. Two more things here, you're compared to price now gets passed to AI shopping agents so that they show when a product is on sale, no setup needed. And in the same Agentyc section, there's a knowledge base. It's the facts AI agents use to answer questions about your store, like your returns, shipping, and contact details. Shopify builds it by scanning your store, and the facts it finds stay unpublished until you approve them. It even suggests changes when your store changes. My take, check your eligibility today, then read what the AI knows about your store. If your return policy is wrong in there, the AI will repeat it to every customer. Now, for the speed updates, because some of these happen without you doing anything, pages on Shopify stores now load faster because Shopify only loads the CSS each page actually uses. That's free speed. And this one has a deadline. Since October 1st, apps can no longer create or update script tags. Script tags are the old way apps added code to your store. The ones already on your store keep working for now, but on March 1st, 2027, Shopify stops loading them completely. Apps have to move to theme app extensions or web pixels. So go through your installed apps. If an old app still depends on script tags and hasn't moved by March, it will stop working. And if someone built you a custom app directly in your admin, that one can't use the new extensions at all. So its code has to move inside your theme. Better to ask now than find out in March. Search on your store also got better. Shoppers get better suggestions when they type, and Shopify says that add to carts from search went up by 8%. And for developers, there's a new theme architecture in developer preview. Pages built from blocks, Tailwind built in, and markdown files to guide AI agents. It's not something to rebuild your store on today, but worth watching. My take, ask your oldest apps about script tags this week. You have until March, but don't leave it for later. Checkout got a few updates that are rolling out soon, too. The useful one, custom fields. You can add text inputs, date pickers, checkboxes, and choice lists to the checkout now. So you can collect gift messages, delivery instructions, delivery date without an extra app. The payment methods also get a new tile design instead of the radio buttons, so they look cleaner and take less space. The form gets a tighter layout with less scrolling and clearer error messages. And the thank you page gets a small animation when the order is confirmed. My take, if you pay for an app to just add a gift message or delivery note field, you might be able to remove it soon. The last big one is about protecting your money. Shopify now blocks high-risk orders before the payment is even authorized at checkout. On the orders page, you can see which factors made an order risky, so you can decide whether to ship it. For chargebacks, Shopify's adding AI written responses for every dispute based on the customer's bank and the reason code. When a customer says the order never arrived, Shopify attaches the carrier's proof of delivery for you and delivery photos from FedEx now show up right on the order. There's also a new Shopify Protect app where you can write your own fraud rules and test them on your past orders before you turn them on. Some of these features are not available right now are rolling out soon. My take is that you don't have to do much here, but if chargebacks cost you money every month, install Shopify Protect when it's available to you. And here's the rest quickly. The admin is getting a full redesign with Sidekick available from every page. You can now edit products and variants on the same page with bulk controls for variants. Collections can combine products and variants from different sources. Shopify Flow can now start a flow when a product price, tag, or metafield changes. For marketing, you can send automated WhatsApp messages to recover abandoned carts and checkouts. And there's a ready-made Black Friday email campaign in Shopify messaging that you can customize and schedule. Campaign Autopilot runs AI campaigns on new channels like Microsoft Advertising and Snapchat. The Shop Promise badge now helps your products rank higher in Shop app search and in Shopify catalog. On the Shop app, shoppers can put products from different brands in one cart and check out in one tap. And if you have a physical store, POS got a long list of updates. Schedules, stock counts, cart saved across devices, staff sales tracking, and in-store customer recognition. If you only have 1 hour this week, here's what I do. One, add a note to your analytics on September 21, so you remember when the session change moved your numbers. Two, build your Black Friday sale as a rollout event, so it starts and ends on its own. Check if you're eligible to sell in AI chats and what the AI knows about your store. And four, ask your older apps if they moved off script tags.
